With all of my talk about eating, I thought some “food humor” was in order—accompanied by a free Pexels image.

I’ve been wanting to share some of the information I’m discovering out there—tips and tricks or what have you—but I’ve held off for fear that too many new topics will muddle my already oddly diverse and eclectic blog. Then this morning, with a clear head, I sat up and thought… “eh, who cares!?”

That being said, I am sharing my very first…

FOOD FUN FACT!

The glycemic index gives us a way to tell “good carbs” from “bad carbs.” In my case, carrying weight around the middle was an indication that I was eating too many of those bad carbs. The scale is 0-100 and here is the key:

  • 55 or less = Low (good)
  • 56- 69 = Medium
  • 70 or higher = High (bad)

The smaller the number the better. Those high numbers are what makes your blood sugar spike, wreaking havoc on your body if you do it consistently. These numbers are cool to check out.

I was sad that bananas are often labeled bad because they’re higher in sugar than other fruits, and bananas are one of my favorites. What I found out though, is that they’re not so bad on the glycemic index.

What’s even better is that the glycemic index of foods can change. Unripe bananas are lower on the index… coming in at 41. The riper they get, the higher their glycemic index will be. So now I won’t wait for the bananas to turn all ripe and yellow, I will try to eat them green. I prefer them in my smoothies anyway, and it’s great when they’re not all soft and mushy.

Pasta is my other favorite food! Honestly, I could eat it every day. The longer pasta cooks, the higher the index will be, so serving your noodles Al dente is the healthier way to go. Who knew?!

Lastly, using lemon juice (or vinegar) during food preparation will lower the food’s glycemic index. So squeeze some lemon on that penne!

  1. I think pasta is on the avoid list no matter how we cook it – it offers so little nutritional value and gets processed like sugar in The body.
    And anyone healing needs to watch all sugars and some of my health mentors put bananas on the C list – because even fruit sugar can arrest immune function in a healing boost.
    The Banana is a potassium stick (as my mom called it) but the sugar is a factor and we were not meant to have access to seasonal fruits 365 days a year.

    • Thanks Yvette! I will check it out for sure. I’m on week 2 of a lifelong journey and, for now, I think bananas are a better choice than pop tarts, ice cream sundaes and so on. Maybe that’s why I enjoy them– they offer what I am missing right now. That being said I am not a fruit eater I’m just trying to find things to help keep me away from all those processed packaged foods I basically grew up on. But my investigative work will continue and that website/blog you mentioned will be added to my sources! Thanks again!

    food carries a great deal of emotional value for so many different reasons….it’s good to know your indexes to make informed choices, but for me (like most of us) food, (even “bad” food) connects us to family, to the past, to love or well being

    I have been forced to look at food choices like some of it is equal to smoking….If I keep doing it, it won’t end well.
    I refuse to let that happen if I can help it. I applaud your journey.

    • Thank you Mark! It’s been enlightening to think about food for health reasons. It’s made me realize that I never think about what I eat. I just took for granted that it was in front of me and edible. Anyway thank you so much for the encouragement!

  3. LOVE the banana joke–you had me laughing out loud!! And thanks for the food facts–I had heard about vinegar or lemon juice being healthy…I don’t suppose lemon extract in pound cake qualifies…bummer 🙂 I do prefer my pasta al dente, so that was a plus for me; and I have to eat my bananas practically green–can’t stand when they get spots, they’re only good for banana bread then 🙂

      • Glad we can laugh…maybe that takes off a few ounces? 🙂 I’m quite overweight and have diabetes…but living alone, “food” unfortunately serves as “company”. Depending on mood, stress level, I may or may not eat “healthy”. I love yams, and I think they were on the list for not terrible foods for diabetics…but they’re ridiculously expensive, as are most healthy produce items. Crazy!

      • I get the “food being company” thing. Food is cool like that. A friend indeed. Sometimes I get the urge to try and create super healthy delicious food then realize that is not an easy process!

      • No, it’s not easy at all. Since I suffer chronic depression as well, I can get overwhelmed trying to do food “right”. Last week was hideous, so I shopped with “no limits”–whatever I wanted, I bought. But that’s not my attitude all the time; and I do think I get points for cooking for myself–I love to cook. “Fast food” is too expensive, also–even though sometimes a burger and fries, onion rings sounds SO good! 🙂

      • Yes it’s all personal really. Like for me… I felt myself literally stuffing my face when I was full. I think it’s a sickness almost like addiction or alcoholism. Trying to fill the voids, not feel lonely, etc. Etc. Hang in there lady you are loved. ❤
