—Feathers of Hope Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul— and sings the tune without the words— and never stops— at all. Emily Dickinson This image is something I’ve been itching to do for days now. Every bird photograph I’ve taken has some sort of detail in it that I love. Eyes, beaks, legs, wings… even some claws. I see so many different angles to approach. So… tonight I worked on feathers. It’s an extreme zoom, so I hope it doesn’t get stretched and pixelated, but—other than that—it’s exactly what I was hoping for; lots and lots of feathers. Maybe this is a test. I’ve been looking for ways to use partial faces, to make the portraits more abstract. My goal was to give it an urban feel, kind of like a piece of street art. The subject is my grandson. The phase I’m going through at the moment is thinking of ways to visually communicate—incorporating my art with some kind of “statement.” I don’t think I made it there (yet) with this portrait, but it was my inspiration for the Haiku, so it all worked out. On the Grasshopper and Cricket by John Keats After the vibrant colors in last night’s image, I woke up feeling rested and ready to tackle a black & white project. —The dark flower image was taken this morning. It’s a bloom from the geranium buds that I shared just days ago on Coming Soon. I tried very hard to keep it original, but the temptation to go dark was too strong. I caved. Honestly, I’m not a huge geranium fan (shame on me!). They’re nice, but the color photograph was boring. Once it gets bigger I’ll try again. The wind was blowing, so it was tough to get a clear close-up. Just one has bloomed, so I left one of the buds in the frame—at right—to show off it’s little hairs. You can really see the grains of pollen too. No wonder my allergies have gone haywire! Anyway, this was another shot at macro photography. The midnight oil is burning. Scribbled words on shreds of notepaper litter the floor beneath my seat. I let out a yelp as the computer warns of pending doom: “Online storage approaching maximum capacity; purchase upgrade for more space!” Perhaps I shouldn’t write tonight. Shuffling through images from my past, I contemplate long and hard about which ones to retain, and which ones to throw out. Some of the photos seem so sad, so grainy. I look beyond the flaws, and into the memories that they bring. Perhaps I should save them all, it’s so hard to let go. Attempting to consolidate only creates more commotion, more chaos… I’ll finish tomorrow. I’m actually getting a late start on word prompts tonight. I really do enjoy those, but trying to fit multiple words into a poem or story is—to be honest—exhausting me. I think I need a word for the “week,” so that I have time to digest it, and ponder what the word really means to me. That rush-rush to get it written in one day gives me a weird adrenaline rush! Anyway, I thought I would give the mind a rest tonight—so I did an image for the word Segue: to make a transition without interruption from one activity, topic, scene. It’s a bit abstract (duh!), but it’s a really cool tree that I visited at Christmas, with lights dangling from it, and fireworks exploding behind it in the night sky—celebrating our segue into the new year. It’s been about 2 months since I’ve been online here in the blog world and I wanted to check in and say HELLO you beautiful people! I miss you all, and hope to browse around this weekend and see what all of you have been up to. School is AWESOME! Keeps me super busy but I just love every minute of it. I’m learning so much!! Anyway, most of this piece is constructed out of appropriated images (from an image share site), but it was one of my latest Photoshop projects in my visual communication class… and I wanted to post something other than words this evening. I’ve got 3 classes right now and in about a week I start my fourth: a digital photography class. So… as you might guess I will be posting more images once that gets going! That’s about all. Haruki Murakami, Dance Dance Dance I’ve been dog sitting since Friday and hope to share some interesting images later in the week. I brought my camera… but forgot the USB cable! That’s OK. It forced me to stay off of the computer all weekend, and I needed that. And I had a relaxing movie marathon! And I sit here still… surrounded by three adorable, snoring pugs. I decided to work on one image this evening and I found another archive taken from from a moving car. After some coloring and some obvious artwork… there you have it. A Painted Sky. My interview Thursday went well and it’s possible they’ve matched me to a part time position that sounds perfect for me. I’ll know more this week. And I’m enrolling in a Writer’s Workshop that starts in June! I’m SUPER excited! Peace & Love!
I watched another squirrel (or the same one!) run across the cable this morning and do a little dive into the loquat tree. Looking for breakfast I assume. A few minutes later one of my feathered friends jumped OUT of the tree. I’m guessing that they don’t share the space too well! I got a few good shots, from pretty far away. I guess he/she got spooked as I tried to get a little closer… so two MORE of my parrot friends (that were still hiding in the tree) were quietly summoned, and they all flew away… 😦 What an exciting morning… there is so much color and movement outside! Well, I had a great time visiting my sister! Not quite the photo ops I had anticipated, but hanging out with her was the real treat, so I’m not complaining! I was asked to be on a panel Tuesday night—at a recovery center—and I’m really looking forward to that. If it wasn’t for the commitment, I would have stayed in Riverside a little longer… but it’s nice to be home. I shot this today; the loquat tree as a backdrop to the pansy redbud. Just something to do. Today is my first day back and the backyard has changed quite a bit in a week! Anyway… Spring is such a great time for change. Keep calm and pink on. I had to do something light before I left because I’m really wanting to shoot for subtle lately. Not sure it’s exactly subtle, but it’s definitely pink! It’s actually flowers from our backyard, taken today, with a background layer of snow and sky. I think it was a cool blend! Almost looks like some water reflection going on. I went with an idea today and when I was finished I wanted to call it The Sky is Falling, but that made me realize that the balls should contain little bits of sky and clouds—not flowers! Anyway, I kind of like it for the sake of the colors, and I’ve been wanting to do something with the helicopter that I photographed awhile back- so I think I’m going to call it a day. ♥♥♥Peace and Love♥♥♥
